There are variations to the Model T design, from the baseline passive model to one with active external crossovers. With a passive crossover, it is usually positioned inside the speaker and the speaker designer presets the crossover frequencies to achieve the sound he wants for the speaker design. He has a clever solution, though. The EbenLee Audio Mini Cube and MC2 SE speakers were designed to be used this way. The Design of Active Crossovers - Published on 20.09.2012 - SNOWFactory.com - Keep an eye on our planet. Also, B&W Nautilus speakers use an active crossover design that allows each driver to operate on its own frequency unlike the more-than-common passive crossover designs. If one were to design and build their own active crossover, you save a lot of cash on the passive crossover parts. I have also wanted to design an active crossover, both as a kit and for my own projects. Furthermore, my (small) experience with relatively high order active crossovers so far is that it makes for such a small area of overlap at the crossover point that other design constraints can be relaxed a little if need be. It might be worth noting that lme49990 will perform worse than ne5534/5532 in some situations (specifically, voltage followers with significant source resistance). It seems that a patent that Jerry filed when he was operating Ultimate Ears finally went through, and so he is no longer able to use the active crossover design. Now the signals after the crossover go into. Almost any modern receiver allows us to use fully active crossover circuits if the speakers are designed to use them properly. I have designed an active crossover using two 2nd order linkwitz riley filters Q= 0.5 cutoff freq. The crossovers are designed such that there is a stepping point from passive to fully active system. Both of those things would incorporate a few (or lots of) buffer stages.
